About the Company
Figwork is an AI talent marketplace that trains and manages human intelligence in the new digital age, connecting student talent with businesses.
Our goal is straightforward: help students find paid work and help businesses decide which talent to hire for each contract based on data-backed skill profiles.
Our platform builds the talent infrastructure that connects students with their domain expertise to businesses, including a self-evolving algorithm that tracks and evaluates students' profiles based on their past gig performance/uploaded information and a frictionless transaction experience ON ONE PLATFORM.
We believe such a platform is necessary in the current economy, especially as AI starts to replace the human workforce. In the next few years, freelance/gig markets will see a surge in supply and demand as companies move away from expensive full-time hiring to outsourcing projects to flexible, on-demand teams for higher ROI. The students are the first to feel the impact. Figwork stands at the intersection of this new talent economy.
Role Overview
We are hiring Multiple Founding Engineers to build the technical foundation of an AI-driven marketplace for young workers (age 16-24).
This is a full-stack role with system-level ownership. You will be responsible for integrating frontend, backend, data, and AI components into a coherent, reliable product.
Our core matching and recommendation logic is developed in collaboration with an academic research lab and is likely to involve LLM-based systems. While this is not a research role, you will work closely with researchers and stay adjacent to state-of-the-art methods, helping translate research ideas into production-ready systems.
What You Will Own
• End-to-end ownership of core product systems, from user experience to backend services
• Integration of AI- and LLM-based matching components into production workflows
• Designing interfaces between models and application logic, including confidence handling and
fallbacks
• Building full-stack features that connect user signals, task data, and marketplace decisions
• Designing system logic for cold start, task failure, retries, and quality control
• Making early architectural decisions that shape the long-term technical direction of the platform
What You Should Be Comfortable With
• 3-5 years of professional development experience with a track record of shipping products
• Full-stack development across frontend, backend, and data systems, including but not limited to cloud environments, databases, and more
• Fast-paced startup schedule.
• Understanding how LLM-based systems behave in real products (latency, variance, failure modes)
• Collaborating with research partners and turning research artifacts into deployable components
• Operating in an early-stage environment where product and system boundaries evolve quickly
Research Collaboration
You will work with an academic research lab that develops core AI and LLM-based matching models
• You will help define interfaces, constraints, and evaluation criteria for production use
• You will not be responsible for publishing papers
• Your responsibility is to ensure the research model can survive real users, real data, and real failures
How This Role Evolves
As the company grows, strong performers will take on broader ownership across architecture, hiring, and technical direction, with a clear path toward senior technical leadership.
