Who We're Hiring For: Hex, an AI-powered data science and analytics platform used by teams at Ramp, Figma, Anthropic, and thousands of other companies.

Role Snapshot: AI Research Engineer, Search and Context. You will design and build the agentic search, discovery, and context systems that power Hex's AI experiences, including its Notebook Agent.

Compensation: $225k - $285k base + equity

What This Role Is About: You are one of the early hires on the AI team, building greenfield search and indexing infrastructure that feeds context to Hex's agentic products. This means designing scalable, permissions-aware indexing pipelines, experimenting with agentic search techniques, and shipping those systems to thousands of real customers. The scope is wide and the team is small, so you will have direct ownership of core platform components from day one.

Location: San Francisco or New York office hubs. Remote within the US also supported.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

Design and implement scalable search and indexing pipelines, including permissions-aware systems that serve context to Hex's agentic platform.
Run rapid experiments on agentic search, discovery, and context management techniques, then ship the ones that work to production.
Build and maintain the experimentation tooling and infrastructure the AI team relies on to measure quality and iterate quickly.

Who Will Thrive in This Role:

You have built and measured search or recommendation systems in production and know how to evaluate retrieval quality beyond gut feel.
You are comfortable working across Python and JS/TS, and you prefer shipping fast over perfecting in isolation. Quick iteration with sharp judgment matters more here than long research cycles.
You genuinely like the ambiguity of early-stage team building. There is no established playbook. You will define processes, tooling, and standards as you go.
