Forward Deployed Engineer

Location: San Francisco Bay Area

This role is posted on behalf of the following client: A venture-backed AI automation company building “computer-using” agent teammates that operate like humans across web portals, desktop applications, and legacy systems—without relying on APIs. The platform focuses on automating high-variance, manual operational workflows and integrates with common workplace tools to escalate exceptions and share updates. The company is backed by top-tier investors (including a16z) and is rapidly expanding deployments across enterprise operations teams.

Role Overview

As a Forward Deployed Engineer, this role sits at the intersection of engineering and customer delivery—owning the translation of complex operational bottlenecks into reliable, autonomous agent behaviors. The position requires strong software fundamentals, systems thinking, and an ability to move quickly from discovery to production while partnering closely with non-technical stakeholders.

What You'll Do

  • Deconstruct complex, multi-step business processes (SOPs) into logic that can be executed by computer-using agents.
  • Design and optimize agents to handle UI-based challenges such as MFA, CAPTCHAs, and non-standard navigation across diverse software environments.
  • Configure human-in-the-loop workflows so agents proactively flag exceptions and request guidance in a natural, context-aware way (e.g., via Slack or Microsoft Teams).
  • Lead rapid implementation cycles from discovery to live production in under seven days.
  • Debug and harden interactions between AI agents and browser-native/desktop environments to achieve 99%+ reliability.

Who You Are

  • Strong computer science foundation with proficiency in algorithms, data structures, and system design.
  • Hands-on experience with web automation, scraping, or browser-control frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Selenium, Puppeteer).
  • Strong proficiency in Python and experience building or maintaining robust, scalable software integrations.
  • Adaptable builder mindset—comfortable operating in unstructured environments where APIs are often unavailable.
  • Operationally intuitive: able to learn a client’s process quickly and identify the “gold standard” workflow regardless of industry.
  • Excellent communication skills bridging technical implementation and non-technical business stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; equivalent professional experience considered.
